TONNARA

After the quiet of winter, during the brightest months of the year, an ancient ritual has been repeated for centuries: the slaughter of bluefin tuna.

In search of clear and warm waters, tuna to reproduce approach San Pietro Island.
Here, tuna fishermen begin their work by placing long nets in the sea, forming several "chambers." Thanks to the strategic arrangement of the nets, the tuna are gradually driven toward the inner meshes until they reach the dreaded "chamber of death."
Thanks to the progressive lifting of the outer flaps on the boats the fishermen, led by the Rais, manage to bring out the tuna.
At that point, harpoons capture the fish from the boats, causing significant blood loss that dyes the Carlofortine waters deep red.
It is a bloody but fascinating ritual written in Carlofortine's history for centuries.

Tuna Diving

The dives take place inside a complex system of huge rectangles of nets that extend from the surface to a depth of about 40 meters.
Here you will be able to see schools of tuna up to 100-300 kg, ranging in size from 80 to 200 cm. It is also not uncommon to encounter swordfish, sunfish and occasionally amberjacks and large sea turtles. Dives are conducted in small groups of divers, accompanied by an experienced professional Tonnara diver and a guide from our staff.
